Potato Virus Y

Aphids on potato leaf

Potato Virus Y (PVY) is a non-persistent virus that is transferred to potatoes by aphid vectors. PVY causes mild to severe mosaic, leaf drop, leaf and stem necrosis, and tuber necrotic ringspot disease. Presence of PVY above threshold will prevent seed certification and result in loss of income to the grower. To mitigate these losses, it is necessary to monitor aphid vectors and apply treatment as needed. Through our suction trap network, we aim to provide growers with relative abundance of aphids and more importantly, abundance of vector species (not all aphid species are vectors of PVY).

On the sidebar to the left you can find links to our most recent posts and the latest trap counts. In order to get you the most up to date information, we will be adding data as it is processed in our lab. A weekly rollup will identify any trends we are seeing. Check back often!
